Estimated rates of the lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in the community range between 7% and 12%, and PTSD has been associated with high use of medical services. To study health characteristics of individuals with PTSD in the population at large, these investigators used data on 36,984 individuals from a large Canadian community survey.
A total of 478 individuals reported being diagnosed with PTSD by a health professional (lifetime prevalence, 1%).
