In the U.S., rates of problem drinking and abuse of other substances are highest among young adults (age range, 18–25), and within that age group, the rates are even higher among college students (see Journal Watch Psychiatry Dec 18 2006. These researchers analyzed data collected in a comprehensive 1999 national survey of drinking among 13,933 students at 119 four-year colleges and universities to determine how alcohol abuse and dependence were associated with abuse of four types of prescription medications (opioids, tranquilizers such as diazepam, barbiturates, and amphetamines).
