Clinicians have been concerned about a possible association between retinoic treatment for acne and depression and suicide. Data supporting the connection include preclinical and imaging data (JW Psychiatry Jun 22 2005) and the large number of reports to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Adverse Events Reporting System. To learn more, these researchers retrospectively examined Quebec government registries of medical care and prescriptions involving 30,496 patients. There were 126 patients who had a first episode of depression, at least one prescription for an antidepressant after the diagnosis, and a diagnosis of acne vulgaris in the previous year.
