SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction occurs frequently, especially in women, who form the majority of depressed patients. Sildenafil is effective for male impotence and anorgasmia but has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in women. In a randomized, manufacturer-sponsored study, researchers compared sildenafil (50–100 mg) and placebo in 98 premenopausal women with remitted depression, previously intact sexual function, and intact sexual desire. Participants were taking serotonergic antidepressants (SSRIs, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or clomipramine) and reported sexual dysfunction in orgasm or arousal/lubrication.
