Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by unstable interpersonal relationships, but can investigators measure these abnormalities in behavior and on MRI? These researchers matched 55 individuals with BPD to healthy volunteers and had them play a multiround economic exchange game that assessed the ability to cooperate, respond to others, and repair broken trust.
In the game, the investor sends money to a trustee, the investment increases, and the trustee decides how to divide the money. Investors who feel that they were treated unfairly can decrease subsequent investments. After a round with low cooperation, trustees often “coax” investors to return to cooperation by increasing the return in the following round.
