In contrast with the growing evidence base supporting short-term psychotherapies, such as cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and dialectical-behavioral therapies, only limited evidence confirms the value of psychodynamic psychotherapy, the psychotherapeutic approach most widely used by psychiatrists. Authors of this meta-analysis review evidence from 23 prospective studies with reliable outcome measures (11 randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and 12 observational studies) of psychodynamic psychotherapy lasting at least 1 year and focusing on interpretation of transference and resistance. The 1053 recipients of psychodynamic psychotherapy had “complex mental disorders” (personality disorders or chronic and/or multiple mental disorders).
