Researchers have reported that childhood schizophrenia with onset earlier than age 13 years (COS) is associated with progressive gray-matter loss that proceeds in a parietal-to-frontal direction and leads to dorsolateral prefrontal and superior temporal cortical deficits similar to those found in adult-onset schizophrenia. To examine the growth trajectory of hemispheric and lobar white matter in COS, these researchers performed MRIs on 12 adolescents with COS (mean age, 14) and a well-matched group of healthy teens in a 5-year period. The investigators used tensor-based morphometry and three-dimensional mapping techniques to measure white matter and to analyze growth patterns.
