In some research studies, hyperprolinemia has been reported as a risk factor for schizophrenia. This is of special interest, because PRODH, the gene that encodes for proline oxidase, is located on chromosome 22q11, and hemizygous deletions of that chromosomal region have been associated with schizophrenia.
To look for associations between PRODH polymorphisms and schizophrenia, researchers genotyped 303 patients with schizophrenia, their parents and unaffected siblings, and 370 normal controls.
