In a few studies, patients who did not receive their preferred treatment modality (i.e., psychotherapy vs. pharmacotherapy) have poorer outcomes than those who did. Most of these studies have focused on acute depression. In this secondary analysis of a randomized study comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy, nefazodone, and their combination for chronic depression, researchers analyzed outcomes according to answers to a single question tapping treatment preferences of 429 subjects.
