Three recent studies address preclinical and clinical aspects of the effects of maternal alcohol on fetal and child development.
Sayal and colleagues investigated the effects of binge drinking (≥4 drinks/day) during the second and third trimesters in a U.K. longitudinal birth cohort study. A total of 8240 women completed questionnaires at weeks 18 and 32 of gestation; 24% reported binge drinking at least once, and almost half did so more than twice in the previous month. The researchers examined behavior in 6355 children at age 47 months and in 5599 children at 81 months, and tested IQ in 924 children at 47 months.
