Suicide is a top-ranked concern for psychiatric patients and their families and clinicians. Safety assessments are key, but clinicians are notoriously poor at identifying the patients who will attempt suicide. To determine the risks for suicidality posed by psychiatric comorbidities, these researchers examined data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication and carefully investigated associations among 16 axis I disorders.
Most respondents who reported suicidal thinking, plans, or attempts also affirmed having a previous psychiatric disorder (66%, 78%, and 80%, respectively).
