In previous studies, omega-3 fatty acids potentiated the therapeutic effects of antidepressants in depressed patients, and both depression and low levels of omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with a worse course and outcome of coronary artery disease (CAD). In this randomized, controlled trial of 122 CAD patients whose major depression persisted (Beck Depression Inventory II score, ≥16) after 2 weeks of sertraline treatment (25 mg/day), researchers compared the effects of 10 weeks of continued sertraline (50 mg/day) plus either corn-oil placebo or omega-3 fatty acids (930 mg eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and 750 mg docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]). About 66% had a history of depression, and 62% had previously received depression treatment.
