Influenza during pregnancy has been associated with risk for schizophrenia in offspring, with one study linking high postnatal influenza antibodies in women to elevated schizophrenia risk in their children (Arch Gen Psychiatry 2004; 61:774). For ethical reasons, experiments cannot be conducted in humans. In primates, influenza virus does not cross the placental barrier, but virus-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) does.
