In cross-sectional population studies, diabetes has been associated with depression, with some commentators suggesting that diabetes could result from the psychiatric medications used to treat severe major depression. To clarify issues of sequence and, possibly, causality, investigators analyzed data from a 5-year prospective, community-based interview study in Spain of 4803 individuals aged 55 or older. The researchers aimed to identify new cases of diabetes and to ascertain prior risk factors in 3521 individuals without baseline diabetes or dementia. Depression was diagnosed in 379 interviewees at baseline (11%).
