Many patients with borderline personality disorder show modest improvement and increasing symptom stability over time. However, the disorder is heterogeneous, and few studies have described its longer-term course and outcome. Expanding on previous results (JW Psychiatry Mar 20 2003), these investigators continued their follow-up of 290 individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder who were originally inpatients at McLean Hospital (80% women, mean age at admission, 27).
During the 10-year follow-up, most patients remained in treatment. Remission (defined as 2 years of not meeting diagnostic criteria) and sustained remission (defined as 4 years of not meeting criteria) were achieved by 93% and 86%, respectively. Recurrences occurr…
