Mild cognitive impairment (MCI; subnormal neuropsychological test performance without manifest impairment) converts to dementia (cognitive dysfunction with impairment) in 10% to 20% of cases each year. To examine subjective memory impairment (SMI) as a possible precursor of MCI leading to dementia, researchers in Germany followed 2415 primary-care patients aged 75 or older without cognitive impairment in a longitudinal cohort study.
In baseline interviews, participants were asked whether they felt that their memories were worsening and, if so, whether that worried them.
