Hoarding has been considered a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) despite demonstrated differences between these conditions; for example, it responds poorly to established OCD treatments. These authors developed a cognitive-behavioral model of hoarding, including information-processing deficits (in attention, categorization, and decision making), problematic beliefs and behaviors, and emotional distress and avoidance. They then developed a multicomponent cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for hoarding, including motivational interviewing, decision-making and problem-solving training, and the more-traditional exposure and response prevention strategies effective for OCD.
