Several surveys found increasing prescription of psychotropics to children (e.g., JW Psychiatry Apr 1 2000; and J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 2010; 49:13), but did not include data on polypharmacy. To fill this knowledge gap, investigators examined records of 27,979 visits by children aged 6 to 17 years recorded in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys in 1996–2007, of which 3466 visits involved a psychotropic prescription. Of these 3466 visits, 863 (19%) recorded multiclass polypharmacy.
