Severe mood dysregulation, irritability, and pediatric bipolar disorder. After reviewing the controversies and research evidence concerning relations among irritability, severe mood dysregulation, and the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in youths, the author concludes that current data do not support categorizing children with nonepisodic irritability as manic.1 These children appear to be at risk for episodes of depression and anxiety and do not have high familial rates of bipolar disorder.
