Recent evidence supports Bleuler's observation that a core deficit in schizophrenia is abnormal processing of social information (JW Psychiatry Jan 18 2008). Researchers in Australia used evoked potentials to measure preattentional detection of auditory changes — mismatch negativity (MMN; response to changes in repetitive auditory input) and the following positive deflection indicating reorientation of attention (“P3a”). Participants were 11 young adults with a remitted first episode of psychosis (FEP), 30 subjects at “ultrahigh risk” (UHR) for psychosis (having attenuated or intermittent psychotic symptoms, psychotic first-degree relative, and functional decline), and 20 healthy controls.
