Of suicides worldwide, 16% occur in upper-income countries (UICs), and most of our information about suicide comes from studies in these countries. This landmark, epidemiological study of suicide in India, which contributes a sizable proportion of the other 84% of suicides, reveals several findings quite different from those in studies of UICs.
In people over age 15 years, the age-standardized suicide rate in India was 26.3 per 100,000 in men and 17.5 per 100,000 in women (1.2 and 2.5 times the rates in UICs, respectively), with a 1.5:1 male-to-female ratio (much lower than in UICs).
