In popular lore, overweight people are happier than others, but this may not be so for the truly obese. A French multicity, partially industry-supported, survey study enrolled 3090 depression-free subjects over age 65 in a 10-year prospective study of weight, hypertension, and risk for depression. The researchers used statistical models that controlled for demographic factors, physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, body-mass index, blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, antihypertensive treatment, diabetes, global cognition, and general health.
