The ongoing Bucharest Early Intervention Project follows institutionalized Romanian children who were randomized to continued institutionalization (CIN) or to foster care (FC) and compares these children with those who were never institutionalized (NI). This report is on a subgroup of 74 children (CIN, 29; FC, 25; NI, 20) who had resting-state electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging at mean age 10 years.
Analyses controlled for sex and age. Both CIN and FC groups had significantly smaller total cortical gray matter and lower EEG α power than the NI group.
