To obtain a comprehensive view of suicidality in adolescents in the U.S., researchers analyzed data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement. Analyses were on the 6483 teenagers with both child-based data (direct interviews) and parent-based data (self-administered questionnaires).
Lifetime prevalences of suicidality were:
Ideation: 12%
Plans: 4%
Attempts: 4%
Among ideators, 33% developed a plan, and 34% made an attempt, usually within the year after ideation began. The survey assessed children for 15 DSM-IV diagnoses (schizophrenia was not included); 89% of ideators and 96% of attempters had a lifetime DSM diagnosis.
