Greater availability of alcohol increases drinking and violence by college students (JW Psychiatry Apr 12 2010). To examine the relationship between the presence of retail alcohol establishments and violence in the community, researchers correlated hospitalization rates for violent assault with the density of alcohol outlets in every zip code in California for 14 years. Outlets were subdivided into liquor stores (42% of outlets), bars (9%), and restaurants serving alcohol (49%).
A greater density of alcohol outlets and a higher proportion of bars were each associated with more hospitalizations for assault, whereas a higher proportion of liquor stores was associated with fewer assault hospitalizations. These effects were greatest in zip codes…
