Population-based attempts to prevent problem drinking in adolescents have variable effectiveness, despite large expenditures of effort and money. In this U.K. cluster-randomized, controlled trial, researchers examined the feasibility of a prevention program for students with personality traits that predispose to alcohol misuse.
Participants came from 21 schools and were 1210 ethnically diverse ninth graders (mean age, 14), who were defined as high-risk (HR) by the presence of anxiety sensitivity, hopelessness, impulsivity, or sensation seeking on a questionnaire, and 1431 matched, low-risk (LR) students.
