Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are prescribed commonly for women of reproductive age, there is little information about their safety in pregnant women. Investigators in Los Angeles prospectively examined the incidence of congenital anomalies and neonatal complications among 138 infants born to healthy, nonsmoking women with no history of drug or alcohol abuse who took SSRIs during pregnancy.
All women began prenatal care early in their pregnancies. Seventy-three women took fluoxetine, 36 took sertraline, 19 took paroxetine, 7 took citalopram, and 3 took fluvoxamine.
