Most studies of modifiable risk factors for myocardial infarction have been conducted in developed countries. But to what extent do these factors contribute to coronary heart disease in the developing world, where 80% of cardiovascular disease occurs?
A global team based in Canada recruited 12,461 patients (76% men) with recent first MIs from 262 centers in 52 countries on 6 continents; both developing and developed countries were represented. Each case was matched by age and sex with ≥1 control (from the same community) without a diagnosis of heart disease.
