Results from several poor-quality studies have suggested that black cohosh is effective in treating menopausal symptoms. Now, researchers have evaluated the efficacy of black cohosh in a randomized double-blind trial, performed at 24 clinics in Germany; the trial was supported by a manufacturer of the isopropanolic extract of black cohosh rootstock (Remefemin).
A total of 304 postmenopausal women (mean age, 54) who did not take estrogen were assigned to receive black cohosh tablets (2.5-mg isopropanolic extract, corresponding to 20-mg root stock, twice daily) or placebo for 12 weeks; approximately 90% completed the trial.
