Whether use of menopausal hormone therapy (HT) is associated with risk for ovarian cancer is unclear. To investigate the potential association, investigators analyzed data on almost 98,000 women (age range, 50–71) who completed two questionnaires about HT in 1995–1996 and 1996–1997.
During up to 4.2 years of follow-up, 214 incident ovarian cancers were identified. Among women who used unopposed estrogen for less than 10 years, risk was no higher than among women who never used HT. However, among those who used it for 10 or more years, risk was significantly higher (relative risk, 1.89).
