With the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in 1997, life expectancy has increased for people with HIV infection. In a population-based cohort study, researchers in Denmark compared survival during 1995–2005 in nearly 4000 HIV-infected persons and in 400,000 controls drawn from a population registry and matched for age, sex, and residence. Three percent of both groups were lost to follow-up, mostly due to emigration.
Overall, estimated median survival at age 25 was 19.9 years for HIV-infected persons and 51.1 years for the general population. During 2000–2005 (the late HAART period), median survival for HIV-infected persons was 32.5 years, and 38.9 years after those coinfected with hepatitis C were excluded. Among p…
