Many people with alcohol abuse or dependence do not receive treatment. Whether there are treatment disparities by ethnicity is not well known. U.S. researchers examined data from two nationally representative surveys done in 1995 (5335 respondents) and 2000 (7612 respondents) to assess service utilization.
Among respondents who had ever had alcohol abuse or dependence, 16.3% of blacks, 15.8% of whites, and 14.7% of Hispanics had sought help (through Alcoholics Anonymous, specialty treatment [i.e., alcohol or drug programs], a hospital or clinic, a private physician, or social services).
