As little as 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days can increase health benefits, and walking is one of the better forms of exercise for most of the population. These investigators undertook the first systematic review of interventions aimed at increasing walking.
The investigators found 19 randomized controlled trials and 29 nonrandomized controlled trials. Most of the studies showed that walking increased, in many cases by as much as 30 to 60 minutes per week. The interventions that seemed to work best were tailored to the needs of individuals and targeted at the most sedentary or those most motivated to change; interventions (e.g., brief one-on-one advice sessions, use of pedometers, telecommunications) could be effective whether di…
