Many devices and methods are used to reduce the risk for sports injuries. In a systematic review of randomized controlled trials, researchers assessed the efficacy of various interventions.
Five trials examined whether insole use (vs. no use) reduced lower-extremity injuries among military recruits. Each trial showed a 30% or greater reduction in the rate of injury, although this finding was not statistically significant in one study. In four trials, external joint supports were used to help prevent ankle injuries among soccer players and military personnel; three trials showed a significant preventive effect, while the fourth showed a trend toward injury prevention.
