The prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children in the U.S. has been reported to range between 2% and 26%, a wide discrepancy attributed to differing methodologies. To more accurately determine the rate of ADHD, criteria based on the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) were used to assess a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of 3082 children, aged 8 to 15 years, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
The overall prevalence of ADHD was 8.7%. When diagnoses were broken into subtypes, inattentive type accounted for 4.4%, hyperactive/impulsive type for 2.0%, and combined type for 2.4%. Boys were more than twice as like…
