Drug-eluting stents decrease the incidence of restenosis, but concerns have been raised about the risk for late thrombosis. In this industry-supported meta-analysis, researchers combined data from 38 randomized controlled trials that compared sirolimus- and paclitaxel-eluting stents with each other or with bare-metal stents.
Mortality was similar in all three groups. However, sirolimus-eluting stents were associated with the lowest risk for myocardial infarction (hazard ratios: 0.81 vs. bare metal; 0.83 vs. paclitaxel) and target lesion revascularization (HRs: 0.30 vs. bare metal; 0.70 vs. paclitaxel). The rate of definite stent thrombosis occurring more than 30 days after stent placement was very small but appeared to be significantly highe…
