The relation between diet (the mother’s diet during pregnancy and lactation, and the infant’s diet) and the development of atopic disease in the infant is complex, controversial, and speculative. Three new studies explored this topic.
After reviewing information gathered by questionnaire about 2516 infants, Dutch researchers found that longer duration of breast-feeding was associated with a lower risk for recurrent wheezing during the first 2 years; this association was unrelated to maternal allergy or asthma. Longer duration of breast-feeding also resulted in a significantly lower risk for eczema in the infant, but only if the mother did not have allergies or asthma.
