At any given age, people with dementia are more likely to die than people without dementia. However, in only a few studies have researchers determined survival time and factors that influence survival after onset of dementia.
In this population-based study, investigators prospectively followed 13,004 older people (age, ≥65) who lived in England and Wales. During 14 years of follow-up, 438 patients developed dementia (based on the Geriatric Mental State Examination), and, of these, 356 (81%) died. Sex, age, and functional status at onset of dementia predicted survival. Median survival time was 4.5 years after dementia onset: 4.6 years for women, and 4.1 years for men.
