Once patients have shed extra weight, the challenge is to find the approach that will best help them maintain their weight loss. In this study, three such approaches were evaluated in 1032 overweight or obese adults (63% women; all with hypertension, dyslipidemia, or both) who had previously lost a mean of 8.5 kg with a 6-month behavioral intervention program.
The participants were randomized to one of three maintenance programs involving (1) monthly personal contact with 5 to 15 minutes of telephone counseling; (2) unlimited access to an interactive Web-based education and monitoring program; or (3) self-directed minimal intervention with printed lifestyle, diet, and exercise recommendations.
