One study showed higher risk for “serious” AF among patients who were treated with IV zoledronate (Journal Watch May 2 2007), whereas another showed no greater risk among patients who were treated with oral bisphosphonates than among never-users (Journal Watch Apr 8 2008). To help resolve this issue, researchers conducted a population-based case-control study in a large integrated healthcare system in Washington State. They enrolled 719 women with incident atrial fibrillation and 966 controls to assess risk for AF among ever-users of alendronate versus never-users.
