Tobacco smoking is associated with higher risk for myocardial infarctions and subsequent poorer outcomes, but what about marijuana use? In this exploratory analysis, U.S. researchers evaluated short-term mortality among 1913 patients who experienced MIs. Patients were asked whether or not they had used marijuana in the year before their MIs occurred.
Marijuana use was reported by 52 patients (2.7%). During a median follow-up of 3.8 years, 317 patients died. Mortality was significantly higher among patients who used marijuana weekly (hazard ratio, 4.2) or less than weekly (HR, 2.5) than among nonusers.
