Although comorbid risks for diabetes and depression have been observed, their temporal relation is unclear. In this study, 5201 adults (age range, 45–84) without baseline diabetes were characterized as having or not having baseline depressive symptoms and were followed for development of diabetes; 4847 adults without baseline depressive symptoms were characterized as having or not having impaired fasting glucose levels or diabetes and were followed for development of depressive symptoms.
During 3 years of follow-up, the incidence rate for developing diabetes was 22 per 1000 person-years for people with baseline depressive symptoms and 17 for those without such symptoms. In adjusted analyses, risk for developing diabetes increased significant…
