In several studies, researchers have directly compared computed tomography (CT) colonography and conventional colonoscopy as screening tests for adenomas and cancer. In this latest U.S. multicenter study, 2531 people (age, ≥50) underwent CT colonography and standard colonoscopy on the same day.
Of 109 people who had large adenomas (diameter, ≥10 mm) or cancers that were identified by colonoscopy, lesions were also detected in 90% by CT colonography (sensitivity, 0.9). The sensitivity of CT colonography fell to 0.65 if the adenoma cutoff size was lowered to 5 mm.
