Antiepileptic drugs are associated with high rates of skin rash, and cross-sensitivity among antiepileptic drugs is not uncommon. In this retrospective chart-review study from Columbia University, researchers determined the incidence of cross-sensitivity among pairs of antiepileptic drugs.
Of 1875 outpatients (age, ≥12) with epilepsy, 14% developed rashes that were thought to be caused by at least one antiepileptic drug; 4% developed rashes with two or more drugs. Of 81 patients with phenytoin rashes who were prescribed carbamazepine, 42% also developed rashes with carbamazepine.
