In the ACCORD, ADVANCE, and VADT trials, intensive glucose-lowering therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes did not lower risk for adverse cardiovascular (CV) events and early mortality (JW Gen Med Jun 6 2008 and JW Gen Med Dec 24 2008). In fact, in the ACCORD trial, intensive treatment was associated with higher mortality. In a new meta-analysis of five randomized trials (including the ACCORD, ADVANCE, and VADT trials) that involved more than 33,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, U.K. investigators sought to clarify the effects of intensive glucose-lowering therapy on mortality and major CV events.
