Risk for depression is two- to threefold higher in adolescents whose parents have histories of depression. In this multisite study of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), researchers enrolled 316 adolescents (age range, 13–17 years) with prior episodes of major depressive disorder (MDD) who were currently in remission or with current depressive symptoms that did not meet criteria for MDD and a parent with a history of MDD. Adolescents were excluded if they were taking therapeutic doses of an antidepressant, if they had received CBT previously, or if they or their parents had bipolar I disorder or schizophrenia.
