Levels of circulating sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) are associated inversely with insulin resistance. To examine whether SHBG levels predict risk for type 2 diabetes, investigators used data from two large randomized placebo-controlled trials originally designed to study the effects of aspirin and various vitamins on health.
In one study, 359 healthy postmenopausal women who developed type 2 diabetes during 10 years of follow-up were matched to 359 women who did not develop diabetes. In another study, 170 men who developed type 2 diabetes during 8 years of follow-up were matched to 170 nondiabetic controls.
