Atrial fibrillation (AF) often is not controlled by medical therapies. Researchers performed a systematic review of studies in which outcomes at ≥6 months were reported for radiofrequency catheter ablation (RCA) in AF patients.
Reviewers analyzed six randomized trials and two other comparative studies (poor-to-fair quality) of RCA in patients (mean age, 55; preserved left ventricular ejection fraction; left atrial size, about 5 cm) with primarily paroxysmal AF that was uncontrolled by medication. Moderately good evidence supported an association of RCA (vs. medical treatment) with maintenance of sinus rhythm at 1 year (relative risk, 3.5).
