Many lifestyle modification programs for patients with diabetes are too time intensive to be implemented in primary care settings. In this trial, U.K. investigators studied a simpler approach by randomizing 103 patients (mean age, 65; mostly white men) with impaired glucose tolerance but normal fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels to one of three groups. Two groups received structured 3-hour educational programs on the benefits of physical activity for people with impaired glucose tolerance; half did not receive pedometers (Group 1) and half did (Group 2).
