Some studies have shown that food interferes with absorption of thyroxine. In this randomized crossover trial, researchers enrolled 65 patients who were taking stable doses of levothyroxine for hypothyroidism or thyroid cancer. Each patient received three 8-week courses of levothyroxine, taken at different times daily: at least 1 hour before breakfast, after overnight fasting; with breakfast; or at bedtime (at least 2 hours after his or her last meal of the day).
Mean thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were 1.06 mIU/L with the fasting regimen, 2.93 mIU/L when levothyroxine was taken with breakfast, and 2.19 mIU/L with bedtime administration; all pairwise differences were significant. In addition, standard deviations were higher in the …
